Whitney Avenue Elementary School participates in Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day

On Nov. 14, students, teachers and staff at Whitney Avenue Elementary School spent the morning participating in Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day

Groups of Whitney Avenue students, dressed in purple, walked down Eastern Ave. and Whitney Ave. to meet in front of the school and then walk together, bringing awareness to Ruby Bridges’ efforts to advance the cause of civil rights as a child herself.

“We have a student leadership academy that helps organize events and bring awareness to Whitney Ave.,” said Christina Allison, Whitney Avenue Elementary principal. “This is a student-led effort and the leadership group couldn’t wait to participate and bring awareness to our community.”

The day was dedicated to activities to honor Ruby Bridges and encourage conversations around ending racism and bullying. After the walk to school event, students joined in on a read aloud activity, and participating students signed a pledge to continue discussions around saying no to all types of bullying.

The school’s theme for October was centered around anti-bullying and the walk to school day event was a bookend for a month of activities to promote kindness and encourage conversation.

Allison said she hopes the event will continue the momentum and bring more awareness and kindness into the community.
