Earl LeGette celebrates Women in Construction Week with story time by Kitchell Corporation
On March 10, Kitchell Corporation celebrated Women in Construction week with Earl LeGette Elementary students. A few Kitchell construction workers took a break from building the school’s new multipurpose room to read Rosie Revere, Engineer, by Andrea Beaty, to kindergarten and first-grade classes.
“We’re teaching future generations,” said Ilona McLaren, Project Manager at Kitchell. “We are introducing goals that we never heard of when we were younger, this early on.”
As students huddled close in the reading circle, they followed the story of Rosie, a young girl who wants to become an engineer. When she faces obstacles in the way of her dream, she never gives up. Students were inspired by Rosie’s journey, drive, imagination and creativity.
“My favorite part was when she [Rosie] had all the sketches of what she wanted to build because the sketches were really cool,” said Ruby Hunter, a first grade student in Mrs. Toyias’ class.
Kitchell employees were glad to interact with students. Between the bustling construction of LeGette’s new multipurpose room and preparing for classroom renovations, the team was excited to have an opportunity to answer the students’ questions about the campus modernization.
“Seeing all the work that’s been going on, and how excited the kids are, it’s so gratifying,” expressed McLaren.
To conclude the celebration, Kitchell donated several books to Earl LeGette Elementary students. These stories stand as a reminder for students to chase their dreams, no matter which career path they choose.
