Board Briefs: Feb. 28, 2023

Here are a few highlights from the Feb. 28 board meeting (the full agenda packet is available):

Board hears update on the district’s efforts around equity

Staff shared a report on the current work of the equity and student achievement department with the board. The mission of the department is to eliminate barriers to student achievement, while also ensuring our students feel welcomed, valued, included, connected and empowered to reach their full potential.

The report provided the board with an overview of the work that the equity department is engaged in, and addressed the supports that are being provided, both from district staff and community partners. Additionally, examples of the collaborative work occurring throughout the system were shared, including an update from Rio Americano High School student Surina Naran who shared the student efforts around updating the district’s dress code policy. In addition, Mira Loma High School student Elroe Kumalo and Mira Loma Principal Cletus Purinton shared the equity work occurring at their school, such as hosting the school’s first annual Black Renaissance Day festival last month.
