Board Briefs: March 28, 2023
Here are a few highlights from the March 28 board meeting (the full agenda packet is available):
Board of Education grieves the loss of Clerk Steve Miller
The board held a moment of silence in honor of Board Clerk Steve Miller, who unexpectedly passed away over the weekend. Miller was elected to the board last November, becoming the first to represent trustee area seven covering most of Citrus Heights. During his first year, he was chosen by his board peers to serve as an officer of the board in the clerk role. Prior to serving on the Board of Education, he served multiple terms as a city councilman in Citrus Heights, as a member of the board and board chair for the Sacramento Regional Transit District, and held a professional career in the construction industry.
Special board meeting to be held on March 31
A special board meeting will be held on March 31 at 4 p.m. at the district office for the board to discuss the two options for filling the board vacancy (special election or provisional appointment) and make a decision on which option to move forward with. The process must be completed within a 60-day timeline. These options include a special election or a provisional appointment. The board will provide guidance to staff regarding which option they would like to take to fill this vacancy and the next steps.
Board hears update on district’s K-12 mathematics program
Staff provided the board with an update regarding K-12 mathematics in San Juan Unified. The district’s current achievement data shows that a high percentage of students are currently performing below grade level in math, and as a result, San Juan Unified is implementing several actions to support the acceleration of math learning at both the district and site levels. These actions include district wide professional learning, support for intervention practices at sites, and before and after-school opportunities to engage students in mathematical thinking. The full presentation is available.
