Sylvan students win civil engineering competition

Three teams of Sylvan students compted at the TRAC Bridge Building Competition on Saturday, March 2nd in downtown Sacramento.  The event was sponsored by the Professional Engineers in California Government (PECG) which is a professional organization made up of mainly civil engineers from all over the state.  Our students have been working in teams of 3 since early in the school year.  Their work involved designing and building a balsa wood bridge with the highest strength to weight ratio possible.  They also had to prepare and give a presentation about their design and general engineering concepts to a panel of 8 engineers.  Pictured is the squad of Josh Hale, Garrett Brogdon and Carlos Trejo who took first place in the 7/8 division.  Abby Rose, Ella Mae Pacleb, and Sabrina Ni took 2nd and the team of Alex Havili, Jonnie Madrid, and Jane Stalker took 3rd.  All 9 students earned a cash prize for their accomplishment.  Thank you to Mrs. Shaw for mentoring these students all year.  Most of these students are graduating 8th graders so please see Mrs. Shaw for information about joining the team next year, she is looking for her next group of star engineers!
