What is the Open Enrollment Lottery?

Open Enrollment Video

The Open Enrollment Lottery is an annual process that allows families who live within the boundaries of San Juan Unified School District an opportunity to request a school of their choice, provided there is space available at the requested school and families are willing to provide transportation.

*Available space is determined by defined physical and program capacity of the school after placement of enrolled resident students.

When is the Open Enrollment Lottery application available?

The Open Enrollment Lottery application will be available starting on Monday, December 6, 2021, at 8 a.m through January 21, 2022, at 5 p.m.

Notification of the Open Enrollment Lottery Results

Parents will be notified by letter of the Open Enrollment Lottery results during the first week of February 2022.

*Please be aware that the Open Enrollment Lottery is not determined on a first come, first served basis. A computerized random lottery process will determine which students are accepted into their Open Enrollment choice school.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

  • IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THE OPEN ENROLLMENT LOTTERY

    • If a student does not get into a school of choice through the Open Enrollment Lottery, the student will be placed on the waitlist for the school and gradel level requested.
    • ALL waitlists expire on December 31st of each year.
    • The Open Enrollment Application counts as a transfer application. Only one transfer application may be submitted per student, per year.
    • Once a student is placed at a school through the Open Enrollment Lottery, the requested school becomes the student's resident school.
    •  Parents are responsible for transporting a student to and from the school requested through the Open Enrollment Lottery.
    • Placement in the Open Enrollment Lottery choice school does not guarantee that in future years a sibling will be placed at that school site or that your student will matriculate into the feeder school. Feeder schools are based on the resident address and not on an Open Enrollment placement.
  • CAN I SUBMIT AN OPEN ENROLLMENT LOTTERY REQUEST IF I LIVE OUTSIDE OF THE SAN JUAN UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT?

The Open Enrollment Lottery is only for residents who live within San Juan Unified School District. Interdistrict transfers are accepted from January 3, 2022 through February 28, 2022. For more information, visit the Interdistrict Transfer page.

  • CAN I REVISE MY OPEN ENROLLMENT LOTTERY APPLICATION AFTER MY INITIAL SUBMISSION?

Yes. The Open Enrollment Lottery application allows revisions to requests up to the final submission date of January 21, 2022, at 5 p.m.

To revise your application, contact the enrollment office via email at enrollment@sanjuan.edu clearly indicating the change you will like to make. Make sure to include student name, date of birth, grade level, and parent/legal guardian contact information.

The Open Enrollment Lottery application cannot be revised after January 21, 2022 at 5:00 pm.

  • WHO SHOULD PARTICIPATE IN THE OPEN ENROLLMENT LOTTERY?

You MUST participate in the Open Enrollment Lottery if...

    • You would like your student to attend a school other than your current SJUSD school of residence.
    • You would like your student who currently attends a K-6 or K-8 school to attend 6th grade at a middle school.
    • You would like your student to attend a middle school other than their resident K-8 school for 6th, 7th, or 8th grade.
    • You would like your student to attend any of the following schools:  Cowan Fundamental, Dewey Fundamental, Green Oaks Fundamental, Cambridge Heights Open, Mission Avenue Open, Orangevale Open (K-8), Arcade Fundamental (6-8), El Camino Fundamental (9-12).
    • You would like your student to attend the Spanish Dual Immersion Program offered at Thomas Edison Language Institute.

    • Your student is currently enrolled in a Transitional Kindergarten (TK) program at a school site other than your resident school, and you would like them to continue at the same site for Kindergarten.
