Bella Vista High School wins gold at the Sacramento County Academic Decathlon

Bella Vista students during decathlon On Feb. 2, six San Juan Unified high schools participated in the 39th annual Sacramento County Academic Decathlon, hosted at Folsom High School. The broncos from Bella Vista were crowned champions of the event-- taking home their eighth gold in the last 10 years.


Bella Vista, Del Campo, El Camino Fundamental, Mira Loma, Rio Americano and San Juan High School each represented San Juan Unified throughout the competition by taking on tough categories like economics, art, science, social science, language/literature, mathematics and music. Students also had the chance to compete for awards with essays, interviews and speeches.


Each year, the Sacramento County Academic Decathlon promotes an overarching theme to its participants, and the theme for 2019 was “The 1960s: A Transformational Decade.”


As the top-scoring team, Bella Vista High School will advance to the state-wide decathlon on March 22-23 in Sacramento. There, they will compete for the chance to participate in the U.S. Academic Decathlon in April.


To add to the excitement, SAFE Credit Union provided $10,000 in scholarships for the top-scoring students of the competition.

1st Place: Bella Vista High School

2nd Place: Folsom High School (Folsom Cordova Unified School District)

3rd Place: Pleasant Grove High School (Elk Grove Unified School District)

4th Place: Mira Loma High School

5th Place: Christian Brothers High School (Diocese of Sacramento)
