Board Briefs - Sept. 24, 2019

Here are a few highlights from the San Juan Unified Board of Education’s most recent regular meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 24 (the full agenda packet can be found here).

Board hears update on 2019 summer learning programs

Staff provided the board with an update on the summer learning programs that took place this past summer for San Juan Unified students. More than 7,000 students participated in summer programs, and nearly 59,000 meals were served through the district's Summer Fun Cafe.

In particular, the update focused on the following three programs:

  • Camp Invention: A program that offered STEM project experience, combined with language and literacy curriculum. The program was open to all elementary students, with priority to Engish learners and qualified Title I students. More than 700 students in grades 1-5 participated.
  • High School Newcomer program: This program is designed for English learners who have been in the U.S. for less than three years. The program was developed to accelerate language acquisition and increase student academic success. It was offered to students in sixth through 12th grades and was hosted at Arcade Fundamental Middle School. More than 360 students completed the program this summer.
  • PUERTAS: This summer’s PUERTAS program was held at Thomas Edison Language Institute for 100 fifth through eighth-grade students. Students studied climate change and advocates from around the world. Learn more about PUERTAS through this video
