District adopts revised COVID-19 safety protocols

As of June 15, lesser COVID-19 restrictions have gone into effect across California. In the new California Department of Public Health (CDPH) public health order, an update has been made to the masking guidance for schools. As we have done in the past, San Juan Unified is aligning with this new guidance from CDPH and Cal/OSHA’s updated workplace guidance.

The most significant changes come to face covering requirements which now vary depending on location (school site vs. non-school site and indoor vs. outdoor) as well as vaccination status. The table below lists the requirements for each location and group. Effective immediately, the following face covering policies will be in effect for students, staff and visitors:

Location Group Face coverings - indoor
(may be required in case of an outbreak)
Face coverings - outdoor
(may be required in case of an outbreak)
School sites - students present (including ECE) Students, regardless of vaccination status Required Not required*
Staff, regardless of vaccination status Required Not required**
School sites - no students present Staff Required for unvaccinated staff
Not required for vaccinated staff
Not required**
School sites Non-employee visitors Required Not required
Non-school sites Staff Required for unvaccinated staff
Not required for vaccinated staff
Not required**
Non-employee visitors Required for unvaccinated visitors
Not required for vaccinated visitors

School Bus All Required N/A
Athletic practice/competition All Required Recommended but not required**

*Students who are not fully vaccinated are still encouraged to wear a face covering in crowded outdoor settings or during activities. that involve sustained close contact (including high-risk contact sports) with other unvaccinated individuals.

**Staff who are not fully vaccinated are still encouraged to wear a face covering outdoors if physical distance cannot be maintained.

In addition, the following quarantine guidelines will be in effect for individuals who are exposed to someone who tests positive for COVID-19:

Group Quarantine requirements due to exposure
Fully vaccinated individuals (students and staff) If asymptomatic, no quarantine is necessary
If symptomatic, 10-day quarantine from last day of exposure
Unvaccinated individuals (students and staff) 10-day quarantine from last day of exposure, unless:
  • If a staff member is asymptomatic and wearing N-95 mask at time of exposure, no quarantine is necessary

School guidance is expected to change in the coming weeks, as we are anticipating CDPH to align requirements with the new guidance that CDC will be issuing for schools. Once new guidance is issued, staff will review carefully and share what additional changes can be made with both employees and students.
