Sacramento Metro Fire visits Del Campo’s fire technician CTE program

Fire tech student helping Sac Metro firefighter Since the beginning of the school year, students enrolled in Del Campo High School’s Fire Control Technician program have been eagerly anticipating a visit from local heroes in the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District. Finally, they had the opportunity to meet the firefighters who have inspired their career choice.

Although this Career Technical Education (CTE) program is relatively new at Del Campo, more than 70 students fill multiple class offerings throughout the Fire Control Technician pathway. Course instructor, Scott Schneider, hopes to one day make this program district-wide.

Within the course, students have the chance to learn valuable, real-life skills that are applicable to firefighting as a career. From emergency medical services to operating fire protection equipment-- Del Campo’s fire technician students are becoming well-versed in public safety and are better prepared for their next step in training.

To begin their unique visit, the Sac Metro Fire helicopter landed on the high school’s baseball field as fire technician students watched in awe. The sense of admiration and respect was clear throughout the morning.

Schneider encouraged his students to ask questions about the possibilities in firefighting careers and was overjoyed with the outcome of the events.

Freshman Mark Brown is currently enrolled in Fire Tech I, the first of three courses offered at Del Campo in this CTE pathway. It is because of his time in the fire technician program that Brown is interested in pursuing firefighting as a career.

“My favorite part would have to be the experience,” said Brown. “I don’t think there is many other classes that bring you experiences like this and actually get you into what you want to do.”
