Board Briefs - Feb. 11, 2020

Here are a few highlights from the San Juan Unified Board of Education’s most recent regular meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 11 (the full agenda packet can be found here).

Board hears update on English Language Learner program

Staff provided the board with an update on the district’s English Language Learner (ELL) program. Overall, the total number of EL students has increased over the past five years. While Spanish EL students have decreased, Farsi, Pashto and Dari speaking English learners have increased in recent years. In addition, the number of refugees students in our district community has increased drastically over the past five years.

The English Language Learner team has been keeping a close eye on English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC) scores to see how our EL students are making progress toward English language proficiency. In 2019, the district had 4,186 English language learner students take part in the ELPAC, with 51.9% making progress toward English language proficiency.

Randy Holcomb, principal at El Camino Fundamental High School, also presented to share insights into the supports and services available to EL students at his school site. Services include after school tutoring, counselor support, and transcript analysis to help students stay on track for graduation.

Next steps for the ELL program include increasing feedback loops with parents, students and staff, as well as improving graduation rates for EL students.
