Ten students from San Juan Unified named as National Merit Scholarship semifinalists

Ten San Juan Unified students from Mira Loma and Rio Americano high schools were named as semifinalists in the 68th annual National Merit Scholarship on Sept. 14.

Nearly 16,000 students from across the United States were named as semifinalists this year and will continue in the competition where finalists will be awarded one of 7,250 National Merit Scholarships worth $28 million in spring 2023.

Program organizers said about 95 percent of the semifinalists are expected to advance to finalist standing, and approximately half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. Approximately 1.5 million high school students enter the program each year.
