Important reminders about secure firearm storage

We are all aware of incidents of gun violence in our surrounding communities and across the nation. Providing San Juan Unified students and staff with a safe educational environment remains one of our top priorities. Recently, community groups have asked that San Juan Unified pass a resolution and share information about the importance of secure firearm storage with families. In October 2022, San Juan Unified’s Board of Education passed a resolution declaring the importance of secure firearm storage.

Additionally, beginning in the 2023-24 school year, state legislation (Senate Bill 906) will require school districts to include an annual notification to parents/guardians related to the safe storage of firearms.

Many studies of school-based gun violence point to the same significant point of intervention - addressing students' unauthorized access to guns in the home. Unsecured guns in the home pose a risk to students beyond gun violence in schools - every year, hundreds of children unintentionally shoot themselves or someone else.

Research shows that secure firearm storage practices play a vital role in reducing the risk of gun violence. Storing firearms securely protects children and adults by preventing unintentional shootings and gun suicides. Firearms should be stored unloaded, in a locked location and separate from ammunition.
