Fall 2021 learning models and options
Every family is in a unique position due to the pandemic and its effects. San Juan Unified remains committed to providing multiple learning options to meet individual needs. For the 2021-22 school year, students will be enrolled in our in-person learning model by default. If the in-person model meets your student’s needs, you do not need to do anything.
If you would like to explore options other than in-person learning, San Juan Unified is offering the following:
- Independent study
- TK-5 program
- 6-12 program
- TK-8 homeschool
Families have the choice to enroll their student(s) in independent study or homeschool for the entire 2021-22 school year. If independent study or homeschool options are selected, a space will not be guaranteed at the student’s current school of enrollment should they later choose to return. (UPDATE: Space is being guaranteed.) Students may transfer back into their school of enrollment or program of choice if space is available. If space is not available at the school of enrollment, a space will be offered at a nearby school.
Specialized programs such as International Baccalaureate (IB), Rapid Learner, Montessori, STEAM, Dual Immersion and Performing Arts will only be offered through the district’s in-person option.
While details on each model continue to be refined, a brief description of each can be found below:
Families can enroll in the independent study program at any time. If you would like to have your student start in the Independent Study program on the first day of school on Aug. 12, please complete the interest form by Aug. 5.
- Grades TK-5: The new TK-5 independent study program offers students a learning model that allows them to receive instruction remotely from fully credentialed San Juan Unified teachers. Each school day will include time for students and parents or guardians to connect with their teacher during open office hours and time for both synchronous and asynchronous instruction. Specialized services (English language development, special education services, social-emotional supports) will be provided based on student need. Students will also connect with other students remotely, and engage in independent work time.
- Grades 6-12: San Juan Unified has an established independent study program for grades 9-12 through El Sereno High School, which offers students the ability to guide their learning at their own pace. San Juan Unified will expand this program to also serve students in grades 6-8. Students in the program will be paired with a master teacher who will provide virtual guidance toward course completion and remain on track to meet the needs of their academic future to be college and/or career-ready.
Families interested in the independent study program are asked to complete an interest form. Once the form has been submitted, a staff member will reach out to schedule an orientation. Orientations are generally scheduled within a week of submission. Families with an IEP must work with their case manager to schedule a change of placement IEP.
Grades TK-8 Homeschool
The TK-8 homeschool program offers students in transitional kindergarten through eighth grade the ability to receive instruction from a parent, guardian or other caregiver with the support of a credentialed teacher. Families are partnered with a dedicated teacher who provides guidance on curriculum materials so that parents/guardians can deliver instruction to their students directly. Families/students check-in with their advisory teacher daily to participate in synchronous instruction, assess progress and identify any needed support.
Families interested in the homeschool program are asked to complete this form to enroll their students in the TK-8 homeschool program. Families can also call the San Juan Central Enrollment office at (916) 726-5826 with questions.
