April 15: Weekly COVID-19 Update

Sacramento County case numbers and testing positive rates continue to level off, falling slightly this week to 7.8 cases per 100,000 residents and a testing positivity, adjusted for equity, of 4.5 percent.

COVID-19 vaccinations are now open to all California residents age 16 and above. Keep in mind that only the Pfizer vaccine is currently authorized for those aged 16-17. Those taking the Moderna or Johnson & Johnson vaccines should be age 18 or above. Though the Centers for Disease control did issue a pause on the use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, many local clinics have been able to swap out supplies for the Pfizer vaccine. Visit the Sacramento County Vaccination webpage for more information.

Indoor athletics begin to resume

Following rigorous safety requirements from the state, which also used in collegiate athletics, San Juan Unified’s high schools are beginning to restart indoor basketball, volleyball and wrestling.

Prior to a team being eligible to practice indoors, all team members must complete a baseline COVID-19 test. To remain eligible they must then test on a regular basis and complete additional tests as necessary so that test results are available within 48 hours of any competitions.

Spectators are allowed for indoor athletics but with restrictions in place. Due to capacity limitations, each student-athlete may have two household members attend competitions. All attendees must use a face covering and maintain at least six feet away from others who are not in their household including student-athletes, coaches and school staff.
