Summer Construction Recap

This summer, while many school sites were enjoying some well-deserved rest and relaxation, construction crews took advantage of the quiet time to ramp up several projects and improvements. Here’s a roundup a few of the bond-funded projects around San Juan Unified:

Earl LeGette Elementary School Modernization

The campus modernization project at Earl LeGette Elementary School kicked off in late June with demolition of the existing landscaping and asphalt, site grading and other underground utilities prep work. The campus will be upgraded to 21st century standards and will include construction of a brand-new multipurpose room, kindergarten and first-grade classrooms, as well as a full renovation of all remaining classrooms and much needed other exterior site improvements. The finished campus is anticipated to be completed in Spring 2024.

John Barrett Middle School Modernization

John Barrett Middle School crews are heading into the final stages of the campus modernization just in time for students and staff to enjoy their new space on the first day of school. By mid-August the brand-new multipurpose room and locker rooms, science wing and administration buildings and new student pick-up and drop-off area will be finalized. Crews will still be finishing out work on the new cafeteria, which will replace the old gymnasium. The project is anticipated to be fully completed by December 2022.

Mesa Verde High School Stadium Modernization

Crews broke ground on the project in June and have completed demolition of the above ground facilities including the tennis courts, storage shed, track and field and the old underground utilities, and are beginning to work on preparing the site for the new underground utilities. The stadium is anticipated to be finished by Spring 2023.

Rio Americano High School CTE Modernization

Rio Americano High School’s Career Technical Education (CTE) program is getting an upgraded building for its Medical Science and Manufacturing and Product Development Technology pathways. Crews began work in June and paving work is complete and the new fire main has been installed. The project is expected to be completed in early 2023.

Other renovations

San Juan Unified was busy at work on a number of other renovation projects at sites that included the resurfacing of the lap pool at Bella Vista and Mira Loma High Schools, roofing updates, upgrading furniture and more.

Additionally, San Juan Unified continued the planning process for two other major projects this summer:

Arcade Fundamental Middle School Modernization

Arcade Fundamental Middle School spent the summer in the planning phases of a complete campus modernization and new construction. San Juan Unified project staff held a meeting in June for neighbors and community members to provide input on the proposed plans.

Katherine Johnson Middle School Relocation and Modernization

Katherine Johnson Middle School is in the planning stage of a potential relocation to the current Creekside Adult School site, as well as a new construction/modernization project to bring the middle school up to 21st century standards. Two community input meetings were held in June to gather information from the surrounding residents and community on the modernization process.
