Dec. 17: Weekly COVID-19 Update

Sacramento County saw a significant jump in the number of COVID-19 cases per day this week. As of Tuesday, the county’s COVID-19 adjusted case rate stood at 44.1 cases per 100,000 residents, climbing from 31.6 cases the week prior. The greater Sacramento region’s intensive care unit (ICU) capacity stood at 14.1 percent which is below the 15 percent threshold that triggers the current Regional Stay Home Order but is significantly higher than other regions in California that have now seen ICUs completely overwhelmed with no remaining capacity.

Expected return timing

On Tuesday night’s board of education meeting, Superintendent Kent Kern shared that district and school staff continue to make the preparations necessary so that the planned in-person hybrid learning model can be offered as soon as Sacramento County has been in the red tier of the state’s COVID-19 risk assessment system for two weeks.

State athletic guidance

Earlier in the week, the California Department of Public Health released revised guidance on youth athletics. Under the new guidance, no competitions will be allowed until Jan. 25 at the earliest. San Juan Unified has paused all athletic conditioning programs through the winter break and will reassess opening training efforts in January.

Offices closed for winter break

All San Juan Unified school and district offices will be closed to the public from Dec. 19 through Jan. 3 during winter break. Essential district departments will be staffed and accessible via phone and email from Dec. 21 through 24.

Update on touch Chromebooks for early learners

A portion of the large order of touch-based Chromebook devices ordered by the district for our early learners has finally shipped. Unfortunately, the bulk of the order remains unfulfilled.

Over the summer, the district ordered thousands of Chromebooks that use a touch display for use by preschool and other early learners. Due to supply chain shortages caused by high demand and the pandemic, the order has not been filled by the vendor. Staff continue to monitor the order and look for alternatives.
