Board Briefs - May 25, 2021

Here are a few highlights from last night’s board meeting:

Update on in-person learning and COVID-19 response

Superintendent Kern shared it is expected that spacing limitations within our schools will be removed when state and local health guidance changes on June 15. The face covering requirement at schools is not expected to change on June 15. Face covering guidance from the California Department of Public Health and Sacramento County Public Health may change for the 2021-2022 school year, but that has not yet been determined.

All San Juan Unified schools will return to a traditional full-time, five days per-week schedule starting Aug. 12. The district will continue to provide a choice in instructional models by offering independent study for grades 9-12 and homeschool for kindergarten through eighth grade. A virtual academy option is being explored, however, state legislators and other officials are still discussing what may or may not be allowed. This could affect the district’s ability to offer a virtual academy option.

Renaming of new middle school at Encina

The board approved the name of Katherine Johnson Middle School for the new middle school at Encina’s existing campus. Katherine Johnson was a mathematician for NASA and her math helped the U.S. land on the moon. This is the first school in San Juan Unified named after a woman and a person of color.

Update on summer professional learning opportunities

This year, the need to prepare San Juan Unified’s classified, certificated, and administrative staff is critical to prioritize key actions which are necessary to support mitigating learning loss. San Juan Unified will leverage the summer months to provide a variety of professional development sessions, using several professional learning formats, to support staff with deepening knowledge around social-emotional supports, trauma-informed practices, curriculum resources, instructional strategies, content-specific curriculum, social justice standards, and other key initiatives. The district will offer a blend of synchronous and asynchronous learning experiences.

Update on Camp Winthers summer activities

Staff provided the board with an update on Camp Winthers activities this summer. The camp will run at 45 percent of capacity and will run three different programs each week. For more information, visit
