Students explore creativity through El Camino’s video production pathway

Student working with radio equipment High schools throughout San Juan Unified offer Career Technical Education (CTE) programs to students. These courses provide hands-on, unpaid training that is designed to prepare them for life after graduation with entry-level, marketable skills.

At El Camino Fundamental High School, students have the opportunity to explore their creativity by participating in the Arts, Media and Entertainment CTE program. Throughout the school year, students are able to learn and practice their skills in video, media and radio production.

While most of the Media I course is focused on the basic knowledge of proper production, the second course in the program utilizes that knowledge for two student-run media projects: Low Down Productions-- home to El Camino’s weekly announcement broadcast-- and KYDS 91.5 FM-- Sacramento’s only student-run radio station.

After spending time as a professional journalist, El Camino alumnus Matt Sumpter returned to his alma mater to assist in building and maintaining excellence in the high school’s media program.

“We designed [this program] around the creative process and that’s my focus,” said Sumpter. “I think this program really kind of cultivates that creativity in kids.”

Through ongoing participation on campus and beyond, students enrolled in Sumpter’s media programs are gaining valuable production experience, making them marketable right out of high school.

Junior Taylor Halladay plans on utilizing the knowledge he’s acquired to make himself valuable both in front of and behind the camera. After finding a passion in the school’s drama courses, he wanted to prepare for a multifaceted career in entertainment.

“[Media] is helping me with my career goals because I’m getting experience in every form of entertainment,” said Halladay. “If I want to be in the industry, I’m not set on one particular job.”
